What is an interpreter?
This morning there was an explanation from the man himself about the current scandal involving a big-league baseball player. His new interpreter was sitting next to him, and while most news reports omit the interpreter's English, the TBS program played the new interpreter's English after the Japanese explanation by the player himself. It was interesting to see that various unique Japanese modifiers were omitted and only the main points were translated.
It was typical American English, which was very easy for me to understand because I listened to it after the Japanese explanation by the interpreter. The former interpreter who caused the scandal grew up in a Japanese environment because his parents are Japanese, and it is said that he interpreted with a deeper understanding of Japanese people's feelings. I cannot imagine how the great leaguer must have felt.
When I was younger, I once worked as a kind of interpreter using my knowledge of music, but I realized that it is not easy to interpret in a proper setting with only a slight understanding of English, so I have not done so except as a volunteer interpreter.
I once heard a Japanese interpreter who was an expert in English say that sometimes the foreigner interpreting could not understand the English words if they were changed into too difficult words in daily conversation. I remember that he said that it was necessary to have a high level of language skills in both Japanese and English to be able to interpret into Japanese and English as clearly as possible. I also received some training in simultaneous interpretation, but I realized that it was impossible for me to practice communicating Japanese in Japanese.
Japan is a country with remarkable internationalization. Some students go on to high school to study at specialized language schools. I think it is a good thing to challenge yourself, but it is also true that it is difficult to compete with people from the country where the language is spoken. It is also true that there are students who choose a language high school because they dislike math and science rather than because they like English. Even in such a high school, there is no lack of math and science courses, and some students find English even more difficult and come to dislike both. This is probably one of the reasons why such specialized high schools are still not as good as top high schools, where there are students who know everything about college.
I understand these things now, and young students may have no choice but to do as their hearts dictate and understand in the future.
However, interpreting is a very responsible and demanding job.
