2005年、東京都知事の石原慎太郎氏が、閉塞状態の我が国を少しでも立て直そうと東京五輪の招致提言し、それから2011年の未曾有の東日本大震災を乗り越え、2013年に国家一丸となって、2020年の東京五輪開催決定を勝ち得たのであった。その時は日本国中が歓喜の渦に飲み込まれ「おもてなし」という言葉が、流行り言葉になったのである。
しかし、今の五輪の悪い状況を暗示するかのように、最初から問題続きであった。思い返しただけでも、メインスタジアムの設計変更やエンブレムの盗用騒動、五輪招致の買収疑惑、開会式の演出責任者の交代問題、さらにその止めは新型コロナウイルスの蔓延での1年延期、そして未だに終息ぜずほとんどの競技が、無観客開催にまでなってしまった。
1964年の東京五輪当時は私は10歳だったが、明らかにその時の国や国民の高揚感は違う。でも国がやると決めた以上国民として応援したと思うし、「終わりよければすべてよし」の言葉通り、「やはりやって良かった！」と言える大会になって欲しいと願うのである。
でもそんな時に同じタイミングでの大谷翔平選手の活躍は、日本国民の心の救いになるのは私だけではないだろう。もし野球競技に大谷翔平選手が出ていたら、国民の五輪への関心度は格段に上がっていたに違いない！

#5 July 12th, 2021 「Tokyo Olympics and Shohei Ohtani」
In 2005, Shintaro Ishihara, the governor of Tokyo, proposed a bid to host the Tokyo Olympics in an attempt to rebuild Japan, which was in a state of stagnation, and after overcoming the unprecedented Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, the entire nation came together in 2013 and won the decision to host the 2020 Olympics. At that time, the whole country was engulfed in a whirlpool of joy, and the word "Omotenashi" became a buzzword.
However, as if to hint at the current bad situation of the Olympics, there were a series of problems from the beginning. Just thinking back, there were changes in the design of the main stadium, a scandal over the theft of the emblem, suspicions of bribery in the bid for the Olympics, problems with the replacement of the director of the opening ceremony, and then the postponement of the Olympics for another year due to the spread of the new coronavirus.
I was 10 years old at the time of the Tokyo Olympics in 1964, and it was obvious that the excitement of the country and the people was different then. However, as a nation, I think we supported the Olympics when the government decided to hold them, and as the saying goes, "All's well that ends well," I hope the Olympics will be one that we can say, "I'm glad we did it! As the saying goes, "All's well that ends well.
But I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that Shohei Otani's success at the same time will be a great relief to the Japanese people. If Shohei Otani had played in the baseball event, the public's interest in the Olympics would have increased dramatically!
